MACC urges Indonesians to report all cases of graft

KUALA LUMPUR: Whether it’s RM1 or RM1mil, Indonesians living in Malaysia are encouraged to report incidents of corruption to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), with the assurance that every case will be investigated without fear or favour.
MACC deputy chief commissioner (prevention) Datuk Shamsun Baharin Mohd Jamil urged Indonesians, who make up the biggest population of migrant workers in Malaysia, to come forward and seek assistance from the commission on matters of corruption.
“Some foreigners living in the country face problems involving corruption. But they don’t know how and where to report it.
“They don’t know that they are entitled to receive protection. We have the Whistleblower Protection Act and Witness Protection Act.
“Any Indonesian in the country victimised by corruption involving anyone, including civil servants, can come to us,” he told reporters after handing over an educational anti-corruption kit to Indonesian ambassador to Malaysia Herman Prayitno at the embassy Thursday.
Shamsul Baharin also sought the embassy's assistance to track down witnesses who disappeared or went incommunicado after returning to Indonesia.
“It is pointless if we can't charge a suspect in court due to the lack of witnesses,” he told reporters.
Shamsun Baharin stressed that MACC will help victims of corruption not only from Indonesia, but also from other countries.
“The reason why we started out with Indonesians is because they make up the biggest migrant population in the country,” he said.
The anti-corruption kit comprises a DVD, leaflet and poster conveying messages and information on how to report graft cases to MACC.
Prayitno said there are currently three million Indonesians residing in Malaysia
